Rapid advances in vehicle technology are reducing some demands on drivers and increasing others.  Already, cars can reverse, park, keep a safe distance, scan for hazards with only minimum intervention from the driver.  The prospect of the self-driving car is no longer a remote one.

The implications for driver training are profound. The onus is on individual driving instructors to keep pace with developments and licensing authorities to keep their test standards, training requirements and assessment regimes under regular review.
